Job Description Roles & Responsibilities The post holder will always work within the scope of practice, putting the health, wellbeing and safety of their patient first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate their needs. Responsibilities Registered Nurse will: Be responsible for providing and coordinating patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment. They will work with a team of physicians and other health care specialists or allied health in various settings. Perform systematic patient assessment, re-assessment and collect pertinent data about the patient’s health or situation. Understand and analyse the assessment information and data. Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues. Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient’s planned care. Create and evaluate patient care plans with the inter-professional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders. Record vital signs, recognize, address and escalate all abnormalities. Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice. Employ strategies to promote patients’ health and a safe environment. Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations. Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope such as but not limited to Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation etc. Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment. Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions. Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions. Provide wound care management. Assist in medical procedures invasive or non-invasive as needed. Facilitate the process of safe patient`s admission, transfer and discharge. Emergency Department-Specific Responsibilities: Perform rapid triage and prioritization of patients based on Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) triage system Initiate emergency protocols and interventions for critical patients (e.g., Code blue management, MI Management, stroke management, trauma activation, sepsis protocol). Manage multiple patients simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. Administer and monitor emergency medications, including high-alert drugs, according to protocols. Perform specialized emergency procedures such as wound suturing assistance, splinting, airway management support, and assisting with chest tube insertion. Recognize and manage life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, sepsis, trauma, and stroke. Assess, prioritize, and manage paediatric emergencies, recognizing age-specific physiological and psychological differences; provide appropriate interventions such as paediatric airway management, fluid resuscitation, and medication dosing based on weight. Support and manage maternity emergencies, including triaging obstetric patients, recognizing signs of obstetric complications (e.g., eclampsia, preterm labor, postpartum haemorrhage), and assisting in emergency childbirth and neonatal resuscitation. Collaborate with EMS (Emergency Medical Services) during patient handovers and participate in ambulance offloads as needed. Prepare and maintain emergency carts and ensure all emergency equipment is functional and readily available. Ensure infection prevention practices are followed during high-risk procedures and during care of infectious patients. Provide emotional support and crisis intervention to patients and families in acute situations. Participate in disaster response drills and mass casualty incidents as per hospital emergency preparedness plans. Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams during emergencies using closed-loop communication. Plan and execute appropriate patient disposition from the Emergency Department, including admission, transfer, discharge, or referral according to patient condition and hospital policy. Conduct thorough and structured handover communication using standardized tools (e.g., SBAR – Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) to ensure continuity of care when transferring patient responsibility. Safely shift patients from the Emergency Department to other departments, ensuring proper monitoring, documentation, and verbal/written communication during transitions of care. Provide patient and family education related to diagnosis, treatments, discharge instructions, follow-up care, and recognition of warning signs, ensuring understanding and encouraging patient engagement in their care. Document care promptly, accurately, and thoroughly in emergency settings. Desired Candidate Profile Essential: the post holder must Have an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates. Manage their own professional re-licensure. Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card. Be willing to work across departments when necessary. Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written) DESIRABLE: The post holder should have: Evidenced ability to work as part of an inter-professional team. Organizational and administrative skills with which to use the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
