Casting Machine Operator

Job Description Roles & Responsibilities JOB DESCRIPTION – Casting Machine Operator Department: Pipe Casting / Production Industry: Ductile Iron Pipe Manufacturing Reports to: Casting Supervisor / Production Engineer Shift: Rotational Job Purpose To operate and monitor the centrifugal casting machines used to produce ductile iron pipes, ensuring correct mould preparation, metal pouring, cooling, extraction, and continuous casting performance with high safety and quality standards. Key Responsibilities Casting Machine Operation Operate horizontal centrifugal casting machines as per production schedule. Hot mould -- Prepare molds: cleaning, coating application, drying, and preheating. Ensure proper alignment, speed settings (RPM), and cycle parameters for each pipe size. Receive molten metal from the furnace and coordinate safe, controlled pouring. Monitor casting cycle: pouring, rotation, solidification, cooling water flow, and mold extraction. Remove cast pipes using hydraulic/mechanical ejectors and transfer systems. Process Monitoring & Control Check casting temperature, pouring time, and rotation speed. Monitor mold coating thickness, wear, and coating consistency. Adjust water cooling flow rate according to pipe size and recipe. Report abnormalities such as incomplete solidification, blowholes, cracks, or poor coating adhesion. Equipment Inspection & Routine Maintenance Inspect molds, machine, runner, hopper bearings, coating and hydraulic units before start-up. Check machine lubrication, hydraulic pressure, and line alignment. Change the mould whenever required. Assist maintenance technicians during breakdowns and preventive maintenance. Keep casting machine area clean and safe from spills, metal scrap, and coating material. Quality Control Conduct visual inspection of cast pipes for defects (surface, thickness, blowholes, shrinkage). Measure pipe wall thickness using gauges and verify against standards. Ensure pipe weight and dimensions meet production specifications. Coordinate with QC and metallurgy departments for sample testing (hardness, microstructure, chemistry). Safety & Compliance Follow all safety procedures related to molten metal handling and casting equipment. Wear mandatory PPE: heat-resistant clothing, gloves, helmet, safety boots, face shield. Ensure all machine guards, interlocks, and emergency stops function properly. Participate in safety training, 5S, and ISO compliance activities. Documentation & Reporting Maintain daily shift logs: production, defects, machine parameters, and downtime. Report casting failures, coating issues, or machine malfunction to the supervisor. Assist in preparing daily/weekly production reports. Skills & Competencies Required Knowledge of ductile iron centrifugal casting operations. Able to handle multi task / more than one function . Also, Training employees to perform different job functions. Ability to operate and maintain the casting machines.. Knowledge of hydraulic systems and mechanical equipment. Knowledge of ccm process parameters, pipe measurement gauges, and casting rejection . Strong attention to detail and safety. Teamwork and communication skills. Knowledge of metal quality, core making process, Mould preparation, Annealing furnace operation . Knowledge of Trouble shooting of casting machine, pipe production, pipe rejection. Knowledge of Hot mould casting process is added advantage. Responsible for full operation of casting machine . Qualifications & Experience ITI in Foundry, Mechanical, Metallurgy, or relevant trade. 10–15 years experience in centrifugal casting operations (ductile iron pipe manufacturing preferred). Experience with Hot mould casting process is an advantage. Physical Requirements Ability to work in high-temperature foundry environments. Must lift tools/coating materials and handle equipment safely. Ability to work in rotating shifts. Work Environment Foundry casting line with high noise, heat, molten metal exposure. Coordination with furnace, metallurgy, coating, and finishing departments. Desired Candidate Profile .
